WAEC: Federal Government announces new date for 2020 examination
The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared 4 August as the new date for the commencement of the 2020 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). According to a report from Channels TV, it was revealed by the state minister of education, Emeka Nwajiuba during the briefing of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 on Monday 6 July.
At the briefing, Emeka said: "From 4 August to 5 September, please take note. Last week the chairman of the PTF announced that school facilities would be available for those who want to go into revision classes."
"The idea here is that we have a whole month from now till then, those who can and those who are willing; the states who are willing should make their schools available for their children to revise.
"We have done the most we can with our representatives at WAEC, and we have, this afternoon, confirmed that the dates allotted for the exams would be from 4 August through to 5 September."
He added that the education ministry after a meeting with the officials of Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) and other necessary stakeholders would consider publishing the time table for the examination.
He also stated that once the WAEC examination comes to an end, it will be followed up by the National Examination Council (NECO) and the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) examinations respectively.
The West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) is an examination handled by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) among English-speaking West African Countries to issue the senior secondary school passing out students a certificate equivalent to internationally examining authorities. It was supposed to take place around April/May 2020 but was put to halt due to the coronavirus pandemic.
