Omo Ghetto: The Saga, also known as Omo Ghetto 2, is a 2020 Nigerian gangster comedy film. The film was released in the theatre on Christmas day being December 25th 2020.

The movie was opened to really positive reviews from critics to the extent that it surpassed the Fate of Alakada as the highest-grossing Nigerian film for the year 2020.

Funke Akindele and her husband, JJC Skillz, crafted the movie in such a way that it can become a blockbuster which it later did. The creativity, the acting, the cinematography and every attribute of film making made it a wow for Nigerians.

The Plot

The Funke Akindele Omo ghetto is a movie that tells the story of twin sisters Ayomide and Shalewa known as Lefty, both played by star and co-director Funke Akindele, also known as Jennifer, in one of her popular comedy skits.

The twins Ayomide and Lefty were separated since childhood. While a rich and wealthy family raised Ayomide Lefty made her living by being a tout, running a female street gang.

Fate brought the two sisters together when Lefty finds herself in trouble with another crew led by the sinister Mogabo.

Mrs Benson (Tina Mba), who had adopted the responsible twin Ayomide as an infant, equally adopted Lefty all along the line but now as a full-grown adult.

As the saying goes, "You can only take the child from the gutter; but cannot take the gutter from the child". This was the case of Lefty, who found it difficult to adapt to the aristocratic class she has found herself on the rich Victoria Island suburb.

Her tomboyish nature also made it impossible for her to find love and date guys on the Island. This made Lefty stick to her ghetto lover Femi Stone, a leader of a cybercrime syndicate.

Lefty isn't just rugged, but she belongs to a cult group named Askamaya Bee, comprising Busty (Eniola Badmus), Nikky (Bimbo Thomas) and Chummy Choco (Chioma Akpotha) who always lured her back to the street of Askamaya.

The movie is set mostly in Lagos and with a few scenes shot in Dubai.

Themes and subjects matters in Funke Akindele Omo Ghetto: The Saga

The movie Omo Ghetto: The saga explores the role of women in African society. The unique thing about Funke Akindele Omo Ghetto is that it presents a woman's role from a different perspective.

She actually employed most of the Nigerian Nollywood stars who are indeed capable of portraying the story's real characters to achieve her aim. Nollywood stars like Chioma Akpotha, Bimbo Thomas and Eniola Badmus acted as feisty street-smart characters.

According to Funke Akindele, during her interview, she said, ''There have been stories of women empowerment in Nigerian films, but it’s rare to find them discussed when it's women from the ghetto.

"The way it works in the film is that the women in these streets provide shelter and safety for the men. It is my way to speak certain truths about how women are special, we exist and that we are powerful.”

Considering the above statement from Funke Akindele, the producer and director of the Omo Ghetto, one may be right to say Funke Akindele projects the noble and mighty image of African women, especially those living in the ghetto area.

Funke Akindele, through this movie, tries to show that ghetto women are not only touting but can contribute positively to society.

The movie Omo Ghetto was also a means of championing African feminism as it speaks volumes on African women's strength.

Funke Akindele Omo Ghetto also sheds great light on cybercrime ravaging the whole nation.

The movie opens with the first sequence inside Askamaya ghetto as two police officers give a hot chase to a young boy carrying a bag across his neck. With this action, the viewers' curiosity is aroused as to why police officers will be giving such a hard chase to a young boy of such age.

The police officers keep up the chase until the kid is to escape through a fence.

The movie tackles the emergence of cybercrime and how the Nigerian forces have been battling to bring cybercrime to an end in the country.
