Prostate cancer is a type of cancer that affects the prostate. The prostate is a small walnut-shaped gland in men that produces the seminal fluid that nourishes and transports sperm cells. It is the most common type of cancer in Men.

Symptoms of prostate cancer
At the early stage, there are no symptoms, but at the later stage, some symptoms might emerge. Some of these symptoms include:
- Problem with urinating
- Blood in semen
- Discomfort in the pelvic area
- Erectile dysfunction
- Bone pain
Causes of prostate cancer
There’s no known cause of it yet. However, health experts know that just as it is in the case of penile cancer and colon cancer, prostate cancer occurs when there are abnormal growth and mutation of cells.

Age: older men are at a higher risk of having prostate cancer.
Race: Black men have a higher risk of having prostate cancer compared to men of other races.
Hereditary: if men in a particular family have had prostate cancer, there’s a high chance of other men in the same family having it.
How to prevent prostate cancer
Diet plays a significant role in the prevention of prostate cancer. In other words, you are what you eat.

If you want to reduce your risk of having prostate cancer, you should aim for a healthier eating pattern:
- Eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables every day. Go for those with deep, bright colour.
- Avoid sugar-sweetened drinks. Opt instead for natural fruit juices. Eat sweets as an occasional treat.
- Cut down on salt. Choose foods low in sodium by reading and comparing food labels. Limit the use of canned, processed, and frozen foods.
- Choose healthful fats, such as olive oil, nuts (almonds, walnuts, pecans), and avocados. Limit saturated fats from dairy and other animal products. Avoid partially hydrogenated fats (trans fats), which are in many fast foods and packaged foods.
- Eat tomatoes, watermelon and other red foods. Recent studies show that men who consume this fruit and tomato-based products have a lower risk of prostate cancer than those who don’t.
- A nutrient called isoflavones has been linked to a reduced risk of prostate cancer, consuming meals rich in isoflavones helps. Example of such foods are soybeans, peanuts, lentils e.t.c.
- Stop smoking. Prostate cancer patients who smoke are more likely to have a recurrence of the disease. Smokers also have a higher risk of dying from prostate cancer.
- Being overweight or obese is linked to an increased risk of aggressive prostate cancer. Regular exercise can help in reducing the risk factors.
