NIDCOM to compile list of Nigerians wrongfully imprisoned abroad
The Chairman, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa has disclosed that efforts are currently being made to compile a detailed list of Nigerians who have been wrongfully arrested and jailed outside the country.
This notification is coming just after six Nigerians were convicted and jailed by the United Arab Emirates for financing Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria.
Dabiri-Erewa spoke with members of a non-governmental organisation, the Counselling and Rehabilitation of Prisoners Initiative in Abuja.
She said that the commission had been to several countries such as South Africa, Brazil, Benin Republic and Togo to facilitate the release of Nigerians who were wrongfully jailed.
According to a statement released on Tuesday by Gabriel Odu of the Media, Public Relations and Protocol Unit, Dabiri-Erewa stated that the commission rescued a situation in Brazil where a 74-year-old woman was wrongfully arrested.
However, sadly the woman died afterwards.
"The NIDCOM boss stated that as Nigerians travel out of their home country, they should avoid committing crimes or participating in criminality.
"She welcomed the CAROPI team and assured them of collaborative partnerships with NIDCOM".
