A former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, says Yahoo boys are now role models in the society today.

Diezani said this while delivering a lecture at a virtual event, which was also attended by her former boss, ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.

She said, "The ones with the swag, the Yahoo Yahoo boys as my son would say, these, in short, are the role models they are looking at. These are the ones that reinforce negative societal norms and values.

In July, the Federal High Court ordered Mrs. Alison-Madueke to appear for an arraignment on money laundering charges filed against her by the EFCC.

According to the court, she was charged with 13 counts of money laundering, which involved $39.7m and N3.3bn said to be proceeds of unlawful activities.

She allegedly escaped to the United Kingdom after her office ended in 2015. It was reported that EFFC has since called for her extradition and sought to seize some of her assets within its jurisdiction.

This has stirred reactions amongst Nigerians who say the former minister, who is allegedly involved in corruption and wanted by EFCC, is in no position to criticize online fraudsters.
