Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has explained why Mesut Ozil along with Sokratis Papastathopoulos was omitted in the Europa League squad.

After the Europa League squad list was announced, two Arsenal players were nowhere to be found, and they were highest club's earner Mesut Ozil and the currently injured Sokratis Papastathopoulos.

During yesterday's press conference ahead of the league game against Manchester City, Arsenal head coach Mikel was asked why he made the decision to omit Mesut Ozil in the registered Europa League squad.

The decision to leave Ozil out of Arsenal's 2020 Premier League squad is due to the arrival of Thomas Partey from Atletico Madrid at the transfer deadline day.

According to the head coach, it was a hard decision to take but it had to be taken due to the English Football Association's rule on the maximum number of foreign players as well as the minimum number of home-grown players to be included in the squad.

Mesut Ozil has not made it to any of the matchday squad since the premier league 2020/2021 season started, a continuation from last season.

"He wasn’t the only one that is not in the squad, " Mikel Arteta explained.

"It was a tough decision for me to make because to leave players out of the squad at that level where they know that they cannot get involved is really tough.

"I don’t like it at all, but the decision has to be made because we have an excess on foreign players and unfortunately we have to make that decision."

Why really is Mesut Ozil not featuring at Arsenal?

According to David Ornstein of the Athletic, Mesut Ozil is entitled to some appearance bonuses based on his contract, and that is one of the reasons Arsenal found it easy to omit the midfield veteran, as it will help the club save up to 100k pounds before his contract expires next summer.

Ozil has missed most of Arsenal's games both in the 2019 Premier League season, and the just started 2020 season after falling out of favour with the Arsenal board and his then manager Unai Emery.

The omission of Ozil's name in the squad looks like the end of the midfielder's career at Arsenal as he will not be featured in the most of Arsenal's game.

Things can still be changed in January, as clubs can register more players by then, and Mesut Ozil could get reintegrated if he proves between now and then that he is irreplaceable to the team.

Thomas Partey's debut chances ahead of Man City clash

Arteta is also adamant on the possibility of Arsenal's new signing Thomas Party making his debut against Manchester City during the weekend after just unveiling the midfielder on Wednesday.

"He was here just yesterday (Wednesday), getting familiar with everything around the club. Today he will have his first training session," Arteta said.

"Everything has to come really quickly for him.

"We knew that before we signed him. But he's fit; he's very willing to start playing. We will see how he goes in the next few days."
