Chelsea agrees to sign a contract for RB Leipzig's Timo Werner
Chelsea has agreed to pay Werner's £54m release clause as they look to add a striking force to their squad.
After tabling an offer to RB Leipzig for their hit striker, the blues agreed to meet up Werner's release clause valued at £54 million. The Germany striker has been in a staggering form this season in the Bundesliga scoring 25 goals seven assists in 29 appearances for Leipzig. He has also scored four goals in the champions league.
Werner's performance this season has triggered the interest of the elite clubs in Europe including Bundesliga giant Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Liverpool and Manchester United.
It was believed last week that Liverpool was in pool position for the signature of the 24-year-old striker after Werner met with Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. The manager has been a great admirer of Werner and has shown interest, but Liverpool was unable to meet his asking release clause.
It was also rumoured that Werner met with Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but the club could not even meet the asking price.
Chelsea manager Lampard admitted to be looking to make additions to his squad having Tammy Abraham, Michy Batshuayi and Olivier Giroud all of which has been inconsistent in the Premier League.
Abraham has been Chelsea first choice this season after showing a glimpse of his talent at the start of the season but loosed his form after returning from injury while Giroud has been seen as the second choice. Michy Batshuayi has been an unused substitute mostly this season, and he will be looking forward to leaving the club once Werner finalises his contract with the blues. The agreement will see Werner sign a deal with Chelsea till 2025.
The clause is between €55-60m (£50-54m) depending on whether Leipzig qualifies for the Champions League this season. However, Chelsea has agreed to pay regardless, and Liverpool admitted defeat in the race for the exceptional striker.
The Blues have offered Werner a contract worth £9m ($11.4m) per year at Stamford Bridge and are now expecting a clear run at signing the forward.
Werner will be returning to action this Sartuday as RB Leipzig will be hosting Paderborn in the Bundesliga. He will be looking forward to scoring goals to catch up with Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski who he has four goals gap as Bundesliga highest goal scorer
