Chelsea completes the signing of Édouard Mendy from Rennes
London club Chelsea has completed the signing of Rennes' goalkeeper Édouard Mendy on a five-year contract just a year after signing for the French club.
After signing his contract with the Blues, Mendy said:
‘I am so excited to be joining Chelsea. It’s a dream for me to be a part of this exciting squad and to work with Frank Lampard and all of his coaching staff. I look forward to meeting my team-mates and can’t wait to get started.’
Speaking about the signing, Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia said:
‘As soon as Petr Cech and our technical team identified Edouard as the most suitable goalkeeper to complement our existing group, there was only one player we wanted to bring in.
"Edouard arrives following a season of real success with Rennes, he is ambitious for more, and we welcome him to our club.’
Mendy is touted as a drop in replacement for Kepa, who has been awful at times in goal
Mendy 28, made 33 appearances in all competition for Rennes last season and has been called seven times by Senegal.
Chelsea has been searching for a goalkeeper since last season after their first choice goalkeeper Kepa Arizablaga lost his form making the club to conceive many goals due to his errors.
Chelsea's manager Frank Lampard at some point has used the club's second-choice goalkeeper Willy Caballero ahead of Kepa although he was not really satisfied with the two goalkeepers.
Mendy will be challenging with the two goalkeepers for the goalkeeping spot at Chelsea, with many believed he will slot into the position immediately.
