Breaking: Nigerian basketball player, Ojo dies during training in Sebia
Micheal Ojo, a Nigerian basketball player who previously played for Red Star Belgrade reportedly died during a training session in the Serbian capital on Friday, the club announced.
Ojo died at age 27. "We are deeply saddened by the news", Red Stars spokesperson, Igor Vujicin told AFP.
Even though the club didn't confirm the cause of his death, local media reported that the young player suffered a heart attack.
The 2.16 metre (7ft 1 in) centre was born in Lagos State, Nigeria and played for Florida State University in the United States before he moved to Europe to begin his professional career.
After a short time with the Belgrade team FMP Zeleznik, he moved to the European giant, Red Star where he spent two seasons thus, quickly becoming a fan favourite.
Ojo who had been without a club since June 30 had been training with the Red Star. However, his former team still released a statement mourning his death where it described him as a "cheerful giant".
"The sudden and shocking death of Micheal Ojo has deeply affected everyone- players, coaches and the management of a club that accepted him from the first day, and that he considered his own", Red Star said.
EuroLeague also has extended condolences to Ojo's family, coaches, teammates and all who "enjoyed his performances".
