Chelsea star and winger Willian Borges da Silva has officially joined Arsenal on a three-year deal.

The 32-year old winger became Arsenal's primary transfer target after his contract expired at the Stamford Bridge with him failing to reach an agreement on a new contract at the club.

Willian was offered a two-year deal at the Stamford Bridge but he wanted a three-year offer, which Chelsea stalled considering his age. Chelsea is known to never extend a player's contract beyond 2 years once he is above 30-years of age.

The Gunners won the race for his signature, ahead of Barcelona, with the player pointing out how he would love to stay in London with his family and also that he was lured by the prospect of working with Mikel Arteta, who has been phenomenal since taking up the head coach role at the club.

Willian was a key part of the Chelsea squad in the just concluded 2019/2020 Premier League campaign scoring nine goals and providing seven assists in 37 Premier League appearances.

In total the Brazilian winger made 339 appearances for Chelsea and scored 63 goals.

Speaking on the transfer, the Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta said,

"I believe he's a player that can really make a difference for us. We have been monitoring him for the past few months; we had a clear intention to strengthen in the attacking midfielder and the winger positions

He is a player that gives us a lot of versatility; he can play in three or four different positions. He has the experience of everything in the football world but to still have the ambition to come here and contribute to bringing the club where it belongs.

I have been really impressed with all the talks I have had with him and how much he wanted to come."

Arsenal technical director Edu Gasper, who has also represented Brazil at the international level also had his say about Willian:

"He has a lot of fantastic attributes as a person, as a football player, of course, his character. I'm 100 per cent sure that everybody in the dressing room, the fans, myself and Mikel will enjoy having Willian in our side."

Willian will be wearing the number 12 jersey at Arsenal, the same Jersey won by his former Chelsea teammate Olivier Giroud during his days at the Emirates Stadium.
