On Tuesday, the National Identity Management Commission announced that Subscriber Identification Modules, (SIM card) should not be linked with the National Identity Numbers generated through Bank Verification Numbers (BVN).

It said this via its official Twitter account, stressing that persons with BVN-generated NINs should visit NIMC offices to validate their NINs.

NIMC said the NIN generated with the issuance of BVN would not work on its newly inaugurated mobile app.

"You must complete your NIN registration even if your BVN has generated a NIN", the commission said.

"If your NIN was generated due to the BVN record harmonisation with the National Identity Database, you will not have access to the NIMC mobile app, and your NIN-SIM integration is invalid.

"Kindly visit an enrollment centre to complete your NIN registration", it added.

Many people nationwide have been visiting NIMC centres in a bid to register and get their NINs.

On December 15, 2020, the Federal Government had issued an order to telecommunication companies to block all SIM cards not registered with valid NINs after December 30.

It later extended the December 30 deadline to January 19, 2020, after the masses reacted in opposition to the early deadline.

The FG also gave a six-week extension for subscribers without NIN which runs from December 30 to February 9, 2021.
