The Federal Government in the bid to encourage digital and technology programme in Nigeria inaugurated the digital Nigeria portal and mobile app on Monday.

According to the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, the move was to further the Digital Nigeria Programme which President Muhammadu Buhari introduced on March 19, 2020.

The minister who spoke at the inauguration in Abuja said the programme was part of the Federal Government's initiatives which is aimed at empowering entrepreneurs as well as innovators with the skills required to thrive in the emerging digital economy.

Pantami pointed out that the Digital Nigeria Programme was a vital component of the digital literacy and skills pillar of the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy for a digital Nigeria.

He said that the Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy would be in continuous collaboration with global institutions such as Microsoft and the African Development Bank to ensure that Nigerians acquire the needed digital skills.

"We are championing a paradigm shift that lays emphasis on skills in preference to merely having degrees without skills. Degrees are only meant to validate skills", he said.

The minister also added, "This is a growing trend across the globe. The digital literacy and skills pillar recognises the fact that citizens are the greatest assets in any economy. It will support the development of a large pool of digitally literate and digitally skilled citizens".

Speaking regarding the Digital Nigeria mobile app, Pantami said the application is currently available on Play Store. He also said the app would enable Nigerians who want to enrol into an ICT course to do so from the comfort of their homes.

Most of the contents are provided through AfDB's partnership with Microsoft, he added. Students will also be able to download certificates after they complete courses on the app.

Pantami further urged Nigerians to grab the opportunity and enrol for digital courses on the mobile app.
