The Nigerian movie industry, also known as Nollywood, is the second largest producer of movies in the world, following Bollywood, which is the largest in terms of output. 

Over time, Nollywood has made some amazing series like King of Boys, Blood Sisters, Far From Home, Shanty Town, and Wura that captured our attention.

Nowadays, Nollywood shows are more about having a purpose rather than just being something to watch. This gives viewers a fresh sense of optimism.

Last year, shows like Madam Koi Koi, Shanty Town, and SHE Must be Obeyed dominated the scene. But this year, we are seeing titles like Anikulapo: Rise of the Spectre and Flawsome season 2 taking the lead in 2024.

1. Anikulapo: Rise of the Spectre

On the top of our list of 10 thrilling Nollywood series to enjoy in 2024 is Anikulapo: Rise of the Spectre. “Anikulapo: Rise of the Spectre” is a 6 part fantasy drama series that tells the tale of Saro, who returns to the world of the living to complete an impossible task at the Old Oyo Empire. This Nollywood series is a spin off of the 2022 blockbuster movie, Anikulapo.

Just like the previous production, “Anikulapo: Rise of the Spectre” is produced and directed by the multifaceted Kunle Afolayan. If you enjoyed the 2022 movie, then this series should be to your liking, as the storyline is somewhat similar to the former with a bit of twists and turns.

Released on March 1 2024, “Anikulapo: Rise of the Spectre” comprises a stellar cast ensemble and has been trending since its release. The series is available to stream on Netflix.

2. Flawsome (Season 2)

Flawsome is on our list of the top 10 thrilling Nollywood series to watch in 2024. The second season of “Flawsome” continues to capture the story of 4 beautiful female friends, Ivie, Ramat, Dolapo, and Ifeyinwa, and how they navigate every area of their lives with more dimensions. 

“Flawsome” is a Nigerian TV show that connects with a lot of people, especially women. If you want to enjoy this interesting drama, start by watching the first season that came out in 2022 to get what it's all about. 

Premiered on February 12 exclusively to Showmax, “Flawsome” season 2 features Bisola Aiyeola, Sharon Ooja, Ini Dima-Okojie and Enado Odigie in the lead role, alongside Baaj Adebule, Gabriel Afolaya,n and Eso Dike, among others. 

Flawsome was written by Dami Elebe, known for her works such as “Far From Home” and “The Men's Club,” and directed by Tola Odunsi, who is also the executive producer. The Nollywood show is all about friendship and sisterhood, and almost every woman out there will love it. 

3. Skinny Girl in Transit (Season 7)

The popular romantic comedy series, after almost 4 years of inactivity, dropped the first episode of its 7th season on January 26th, 2024. The critically acclaimed series, which follows the life of Tiwalade, who tries to balance love, family, and romance, sees the 7th season focus on how her family with Mide has grown with the arrival of a new baby.

To enjoy this new season of “Skinny Girl in Transit,"  you'd have to pull an all-nighter to catch up on the remaining 6 seasons. Also, if you are big on body image storylines, then you should add this series to your watchlist this year.

The seventh season of “Skinny Girl in Transit” stars Abimbola Craig, Bisola Aiyeola, Sharon Ooja, Ayoola Ayolola, Timini Egbuson, Ngozi Nwosu, and many more actors. It's written by Lani Aisida and Ifeanyi Barbara Chidi, and produced by Abdul Tijani, who also doubles as a writer.

4. Wura (Season 2)

Though the second season of “Wura” was released in December 2023, this drama series runs into 2024, making it to the list of thrilling Nollywood series to watch this year. “Wura” captures the life of a woman who is seen as faultless to her family, but on the other hand, a ruthless CEO who must have her way to many.

Just like the other Nollywood shows aforementioned, you'd have to see the previous season to properly enjoy this particular series. 

“Wura” is showing exclusively on Showmax as it is the streaming platform's first Nigerian original series. The show features seasoned as well as fast-rising actors like Yemo Fash Lanso, Scarlett Gomez, who plays the lead role, Wura, Carol King, and so many others. Wura was directed by Ben Chiadika, with Rogers Ofime as the executive producer.

With four new episodes released every week and a hundred episodes in total, the ongoing series, which is scheduled to end on May 23, 2024, sheds more light on Wura's life, filled with a lot of suspense and so many scandalous occurrences.

If you are into power-driven drama shows that involve a lot of taking charge, then “Wura” is just the series for you.

5. Cheta’m

The brand new original Showmax series, Cheta’m, which premiered on February 12, 2024, centres around 2 young lovers whose love story is challenged by spiritual as well as political forces and must fight to keep their love. 

“Cheta’m” is similar to a lot of popular Nigerian stories where young lovers are hindered from expressing their love by either family, kingdoms or class. If you are gunning for romantic series this year, this Igbo epic romantic drama should be on your watchlist.

Directed and produced by prolific filmmaker James Omekwe, “Cheta'm” stars lead actors Oluchi Amajuoyi as Amanda and Kingsley Nwachukwu as Nnanna, Kalu Ikeagwu and Ruby Okezie. “Cheta'm” is based on themes such as love and perseverance and is available for you to enjoy on the streaming platform, Showmax.

6. Flatmates (Season 8)

Created by Basketmouth and produced by Kayode Peters, “Flatmates” is a comedy series that highlights the living situation of a bunch of friends and their day-to-day activities in the flat they share. After 7 successful seasons, “Flatmates” season 8 premiered on March 18, 2024.

This show has funny stand-up comedians like Basketmouth, Senator, Steve “Yaw” Onu, Rekiya Yusuf and Okey Bakassi in the cast. They'll make you laugh so much that your bad mood will disappear and your body will ache from laughing. 

Available to stream on Showmax and to watch on Dstv, “Flatmates” airs every weekday. The show talks about important things happening in the country and all around us. You should seriously consider binge-watching it.

7. Dear Diane

Most of us, have in one way or another experienced long-distance relationships, as well as the difficulties faced in navigating such relationships, and “Dear Diane” captures just that. 

Known for whipping out sumptuous productions that are entertaining yet educational, reality TV star Diane Russet, after a long break from making movies, came back this year with an interesting new web series titled “Dear Diane.” Dear Diane is a romantic series whose story touches on long distance relationships and everything that comes with it. The theme focus of this series is love.

Premiered on January 24th and available to watch on Russet TV YouTube channel, “Dear Diane” was directed by Michael Akinrogunde and stars Diane Russet, who also doubled as the writer, Beauty Tukura, and Detola Jones, among others. 

“Dear Diane” is, of course, a thrilling Nollywood series to watch in 2024.

8. When Are We Getting Married?(Season 2)

After the successful run of its first season, “When Are We Getting Married?” returned this year for its second season, which was released on February 14th. The title of the web series gives you a clue about what it's about, but “When Are We Getting Married?" dives deep into what relationships, marriage and getting married is really like. 

This Nollywood web series is relatable for all couples, whether you are planning to get married or already married. If marriage is on your mind, you should definitely give it a watch.

“When Are We Getting Married?” season 2 stars Immaculata Oko Kasumi as Edith and Nigerian singer and songwriter, Ric Hassani as Fenwa in the lead roles. Other cast members include Ronde Oshodi, Patrick Doyle, Vee Iye and Neo Akpofure. The hit show, in collaboration with Film Trybe, was produced by Ife Olujuyigbe and directed by Orire Nwani.

9. The Interview

Popular Nigerian rapper Falz, apart from being a talented actor, took up a new role as a director this year to release his first movie project “The Interview”. The show was also produced by his company, “House 21 Media,” and can be watched on their YouTube channel. 

“The Interview” is a web series that has online comedian and skin maker Layi Wasabi in the lead and stars other notable actors and personalities like Broda Shaggi, Basketmouth, Akah Nnani, Yvonne Jegede, Genevova Umeh, and Nasboi.

The web series came out on January 25th. Its name gives an idea about what to expect, and with the cast lineup, you know funny and crazy interviews are coming. It's like "Flatmates," guaranteed to make you laugh a lot and put you in a good mood. It's definitely one of the coolest Nollywood series to watch this year.

10. The New Girl

This new high school web series follows Amanda, a wealthy teenager who gets sent to a public high school as a lesson. She faces challenges adjusting to her new environment and wonders if she'll find love or make friends. To know what happens, you'll have to watch it!

This high school love drama, starring new actors like Akpang Benedicta Edidiong, Lios Itodo, and David Ezekiel, airs on YAWA Skits YouTube channel every Monday and Wednesday at 6pm. It was released on March 4th.

With the setting of “The New Girl” in a school, the Nollywood series aims to capture the innocence and excitement of first love experienced during youth.
